What is the GOLD and SIVERSMITHS GUILD OF AUSTRALIA Inc.?
The Gold and Silversmiths Guild was established in 1988 by a group of prominent jewellers who believed that the Jewellery Industry required a Standard that would be recognised Nationally and Internationally to ensure the QUALITY of materials and manufacture of precious Gold or Silver items.
Under British Law, the traditional British System of Hallmarking of Silver & Gold by the Government Mints of England, required items made by the English craftsmen to be stamped for the protection of buyers before sale of the item. The Gold and Silversmiths Guild of Australia introduced a similar process of Hallmarking for Registered Members of the Guild to stamp on their creations to guarantee the Guild's standards of quality are adhered to for the benefit of the customer.
The individual Makers Mark is the signature and guarantee of the Maker of your jewellery as to the quality of the materials and craftsmanship. This mark enables the name of the craftsman to be determined inconjunction with the 'Touch Plate' and published records of the Guild.
The 'Touch Plate' , a plate of Fine (pure) Silver, is a permanent record of the Maker's registered Mark. It identifies their qualification and membership of the Guild. The 'Touch Plates' are held in a secure manner as to enable a work marked by a member to be identified with certainty at any time in the future. New members Marks are added to the 'Touch Plates' on their acceptance into the Guild. Acceptance is by the assessment of a submitted piece of work in a secret ballot of their peers acknowledging the professional standard achieved for membership.
The distinctive Guild Mark of the Kangaroo head in a Diamond Frame identifies the Maker as being a member of the Gold and Silversmiths Guild of Australia, and a genuine craftsperson of high quality design and craftsmanship in precious gold and silver.
The Metal Purity Mark indicates the proportion of purity of the metal used. Eg .925 for Sterling Silver; 375 as 9ct gold, 585 as 14ct gold, 750 as 18ct gold, Pt for Platinum and PD for Palladium usually associated with the gemstone setting.
The Date Mark uses the same letter character for the year as the Goldsmiths Hall in the British System. However the surround frame is the Diamond shape similar to the Australian Guild Mark.
This mark enables the month and year of making of the item to be identified by reference to British or Australian records.
These Hallmarks applied by the Celebration Jewellery Craftsmen ensure the quality of your jewellery is designed and made by craftsmen to last for many years… a lifetime.
